Houston, TX, is home to many unique events that are held throughout the year. Here’s an overview of some annual events in Houston you can’t miss:
Uptown Houston Holiday Lighting
Every year on the night of Thanksgiving, members of the community gather along Post Oak Boulevard to watch the annual Uptown Houston Holiday Lighting ceremony. It’s a completely free family event that features live music, holiday characters, delicious food, and a special appearance from the big man himself, Santa. Watch more than half a million lights twinkle, followed by a fireworks extravaganza.
World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest
Is it BBQ, barbecue, or bar-b-que? It’s doesn’t really matter, as long as it tastes good, and it certainly does at the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest, held over the course of three days every February. Trophies are awarded to an overall winner and teams that prepare the best dish in each category: brisket, chicken, pork, and spare ribs.
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo
Nothing says “Texas” quite like the rodeo. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is the world’s largest livestock and rodeo show, held for three days at Reliant Park every March. Livestock and agricultural education is the backbone of the show, and any excess revenue goes back into the community through scholarships, educational endowments, and agricultural research projects. Watch the rodeo, tour the livestock show, participate in some family-friendly activities, and catch a performance by a noteworthy country star.
Houston Beer Festival
Beer enthusiasts living in Houston will go nuts for the Houston Beer Festival, held the first weekend of June in Sam Houston Park. Visitors can choose from more than 200 different types of beer and watch performances by 20 bands on three different stages.
Freedom Over Texas Festival
Live entertainment, plenty of food, and fireworks: that’s what you’ll find at Houston’s Freedom Over Texas Festival, the city’s official Fourth of July celebration held in Eleanor Tinsley Park at Buffalo Bayou. Kids will enjoy the children’s entertainment area and tours of military tanks and helicopters, and grownups can enjoy the Bud Light Lime-A-Rita Beach Bash and the All-American Beer Garden. The Dr. Pepper One of a Kind Zone features all four Houston professional sports team set-ups.
Houston Shakespeare Festival
Since its inaugural season in 1975, the Houston Shakespeare Festival has drawn nearly 500 million visitors and has become one of the city’s major events. Catch a free performance of a top-notch production in Hermann Park’s Miller Outdoor Theatre.
Wings Over Houston Airshow
Watch the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the Navy’s Blue Angels perform aerial acrobatics at the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow. This family-friendly event, held at Ellington Field, also showcases vintage World War II aircrafts (you can go for a ride!) and you can even meet the pilots.
